…And Then There is One
Chattering childhood
Jostles into youth,
Then noisy adolescence comes
In rollicking groups
Of eager, active partners
For tennis, football, hockey,
Bike tours, party games ..
Turning into adults
Moving into families, and friends
Who through he years disperse!
Lives become separate, solitary too!
Time measured in reading,
Knitting, crosswords or TV
Become empty occupations
With no one to share,
And walking includes only strangers
Who to plan travel trips,
Talk things over with
Query decisions?
As slowly groups dwindle
Until the last partners,
Or twosomes separate
… and leave only one, moving into silence.
